Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

A blepharoplasty, also called an eyelid lift, is a procedure to remove skin from the eyelid. Fat can also be removed, moved or added. This procedure is not actually a “lift,” but more of a nip and tuck.

Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelid involves an incision to remove skin and possibly fat. The thin incision is placed with the crease of the upper lid. Blepharoplasty of the lower lid can use an incision under the lash line or inside of the eyelid (transconjuctival).

A good candidate for an upper blepharoplasty has excess skin (and perhaps fat) in the upper eyelid that may even cause impairment in the field of vision. A lower blepharoplasty removes skin and removes or moves fat under the eye to improve contour, decrease puffiness, eliminate bags, improve droopiness, and remove excess skin and wrinkles.

A good candidate is also a healthy person who does not smoke, has realistic goals, and may have impairment in the field of vision. Always discuss your health, goals and possible risks with your plastic surgeon.

Recovery from blepharoplasty may involve some swelling, bruising, eye irritation, dry eyes and discomfort for up to fourteen days. Diligent sun protection will be required until the incision line is completely healed. Always follow the post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon.
