Add a retinoid to your skincare routine. These vitamin A derivatives cause your skin to produce more collagen, which softens wrinkles and fine lines. Retinoids also stimulate new blood vessels. The increase circulation brings more nutrients to your skin and creates that rosy glow. Over time, retinoid use will fade age spots and smooth rough areas.
To ease a retinoid into your routine, apply a pea-sized amount to your entire face and increase applications from once a week to nightly over several weeks.
You will likely experience dry skin, redness, itching or flaking. If these effects persist, you may need to adjust the strength or use a retinol.
Retinols are synthetic retinoids that are less irritating and do not require a prescription.
Apply these treatments at night (the sun will cause chemical breakdown) and use sunscreen during the day. Do not use retinoids while pregnant or breastfeeding.
And remember, this is not a quick fix. It may take up to a year to see best results.
